M23 closures in June – Gatwick passengers urged to leave extra time to reach airport

Air passengers flying from Gatwick Airport have been urged to leave extra time to reach flights due to M23 closures in June.

The planned closures are part of ongoing work converting the M25-to-Gatwick section of the M23 into a smart motorway.

Here’s all you need to know about the closures planned for the next couple of weeks.

When will the M23 closures at Gatwick take place in June?

The creation of narrow lanes will take place on these dates.

  • Monday, June 18 – Friday, June 22 (southbound)
  • Monday, June 25 – Friday, June 29 (northbound)

There will also be a 50mph speed restriction.

Full details of the M23 closures

The following times and locations will see full closure of the M23:

SOUTHBOUND: JUNCTIONS 8–10

When: Monday, June 18 – Friday, June 22 (weekends kept as a contingency).

What time: 10pm – 4am

Diversion route: The Southbound exit slip at Junction 7 of the M25 (M23 to Brighton) will be closed preventing southbound motorway access to Gatwick Airport.

There will be a clearly signed diversion via the M25 at Junction 6 Godstone, where drivers will follow the A22, A264 and re-join the M23 at Junction 10.

APH customers will find our car park on the left, immediately before the Shell service station on the A264.

Will I need to allow extra time to reach APH Gatwick?

The overnight works should not cause any significant congestion, so leaving an additional 30 minutes to cover the increased distance should be more than sufficient for customers heading to APH Gatwick.

NORTHBOUND JUNCTIONS 10–8

When: Monday, June 25 – Friday, June 29 (weekends kept as a contingency).

What time: 10pm – 4am

Diversion route: There will be a clearly signed diversion for Gatwick Airport from Junction 10 of the M23, via the A2011 London Road to Airport Way.

Customers returning Gatwick APH who are heading to the M25 should turn right out of the car park onto the A264, then follow the northbound A22 to the M25 at Junction 6, Godstone.

Will I need to allow extra time to reach APH Gatwick?

Reaching APH Gatwick won’t be impacted by closures, but the transfer time from our car park to the terminals could be increased by around 20 minutes, so please allow a little extra time for this.
